Taking a Knee

Sep. 01, 2023

“Football Alberta supports and encourages the following procedure for an on-field player injury situation.  Both teams will respectfully huddle away from the injured player(s) to help identify and provide space for the on field first aid attention. Once the situation has been attended to, the teams can show respect by clapping the player off the field and follow referee instruction. Football Alberta does not endorse or encourage that players "take a knee" to demonstrate the perceived respect. Should teams wish to do so, it is on their own but no judgement or derision should be sent the way of the team that does not take a knee either from the kneeling team or their fans. It has been advised from our professional medical staff to encourage players to huddle away from the injury to help identify and tend to the injured player(s). In addition, "taking a knee" does not help but may hinder identifying players needing attention and does not serve a practical purpose for football. Respect can be paid from the huddle and the sidelines with the traditional applause for the injured player.”
